Holidays in Hartford

HOLIDAYS IN HARTFORD SET: The 10th annual Holidays in Hartford will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The theme is ''Looking for the Christmas Trees." Participants include the Hartford Apple Orchards, Brockway at the Orchard, Hartford Fire Station crafters, Hartford greenhouses, Klingemier's Antiques, The Mae Company Spa, Hartford Boy Scout Troop 90, Autumn Addiction Archery, TNT Wood Products, Sisters of the Heart and Kellie's Place. The Hartford Apple Festival will be preparing for its 50th anniversary in 2013 with a basket raffle fundraiser to be held at the Hartford United Methodist Church.

Riverfest

RIVERFEST SHOWCASES ART: Friends of the Mahoning River will sponsor the first Mahoning Riverfest starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. The event is being held in conjunction with the Artists of the Rust Belt ''Artober'' show and sale. The Riverfest will be outside and the art show inside. The event includes birdwatching, displays, music, educational and historical presentations and demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be face painting, crafts and an art show from noon to 7 p.m.

Vienna Historical Society events

From the Tribune...Vienna Historical Society will hold a cemetery walk from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the township cemetery. A chili cookoff will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the fire station with the police vs. fire department. Judging starts at 3 p.m. Pies also will be sold with donations being sought for the event.

Poland Historical Society additional open house
The Poland Historical Society will host an additional Sunday open house at the Little Red Schoolhouse this year. Visitors can tour the one-room schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (state Route 224) at the Struthers Road intersection in Poland Township, on Oct. 14 from 1-3 p.m.
The society will hold its next regular meeting on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., Larry Baughman will present the program, “Poland Hopewell Iron Ore Furnace.”

Founder's Day at Arms Museum


MUSEUM CELEBRATES 138 YEARS: The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will host its annual Founders Day open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday in celebration of the 137th anniversary of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
The free event features tours of the museum, historic photographs, pioneer era games, demonstrations of straight key Morse code, children's indoor and outdoor activities, Civil War era laundry, dress-up clothes and crafts. A new exhibit featuring architectural elements is opening, and a walking tour of Wick Avenue will be conducted at 1:30 p.m.

OPEN GARDEN PLANNED: Rodney and Kay Toth of Hubbard will host their 16th annual open gardens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 2 at 5637 W. Liberty St., Hubbard. There are several major gardens including a grandchildren's garden which consists of eight triangular sections - one for each grandchild. Entertainment will include Monica Toth Baker at 1:30 p.m., karaoke by Joe Weinel at 3:30 p.m., John Schinker from the Men's Garden Club of Youngstown with mums and Alice Lang with decorative gourd art. Admission is free.

The Mahoning Valley Players are proud to present Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night”, a tale of lust, loss, and confusion. Whilst Lovers fall in and out of love, a pack of Fools rush round, mocking and subverting their passions, hopes and fears. With mistaken identity and deep, terrible heartbreak, the play offers beautiful and painful explorations of everything love inspires. The cast is an assemblage of talented Shakespearean actors from the tri-county area.

Corn Roast in Mecca

MECCA TO HOST 13TH ANNUAL CORN ROAST: The 13th annual Mecca Community Corn Roast will be held starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at the township park off Route 46, south of the township center. The parade will be held at 11 a.m. with lineup at the high school. The event will include games, prizes, flush tank, food, music by Switch, a trunk sale sponsored by Maplewood cheerleaders, and a Chinese auction at 4 p.m. with proceeds to benefit the Mecca Civic Organization Scholarship Fund. Characters for Ohio Chautauqua 2012 are naturalist and folk hero Johnny Appleseed, frontier aristocrat Margaret Blennerhassett, Iroquois leader Chief John Logan, Lewis & Clark expedition member York, and hero of the Battle of Lake Erie Oliver Hazard Perry.
